My Ten Favourite Perfumes

After I read Jessica Cangiano’s post on her favourite scents (any scents, not perfume), it made me realise that most of my favourite smells are artificial. I enjoy the smell of some foods but mostly I go around the world being ambivalent to smells or even slightly disgusted or displeased by them (For some reason the smell of certain foods makes me feel sick in the morning, for example. I’m weird!)

Perfumes are a different matter. I have so many perfumes that I’ve loved over the years. I love perfume samples and walking around spraying tester bottles at department stores. I love that perfume gives me a feeling of luxury, even if said perfume came from a tiny sample bottle and I’m wearing old sweatpants and a hoodie. I used to save my perfumes for ‘special occasions’ but lately I’ve been wearing them almost everyday. Perfume is not like clothes, perfume I really only wear for my own pleasure. I wear perfume so I can sniff a pleasant smell the whole day through, and why not have that enjoyment everyday!

So here’s my ten favourite perfumes (not in any order).

Chanel Coco Mademoiselle

At first I didn’t like this perfume. It gave me a ‘meh’ reaction but it grew on me in time. I’ve heard it being described as the younger version of Chanel No 5 but I’ve never smelt No 5 so I’m not sure. It’s definitely a mature and sophisticated scent.

Thierry Mugler Angel

I actually didn’t like this one either at first. It’s very strong so use it sparingly. It’s got kind of an exotic smell and it’s also very sweet yet musky smelling. I think I need to start using crazy visuals to describe these perfumes. It’s the only way! This one smells like I would imagine the hair of Jasmine from Aladdin to smell.

Thierry Mugler Innocent

To me this is like the baby sister of Angel. She’s less Jasmine and more ‘girl in a meadow with flowers’. It’s a lot lighter than Angel but still reminds me of it. It’s definitely more of an everyday scent. The bottle is quite boring though in my opinion.

DKNY Be Delicious

My favourite fruit is green apples so I really like this perfume. I love the bottle, with its apple shape and the scent is so light and unassuming that you can safely splash it on. I do find that it wears off half way through the day though. It’s a girl-next-door kind of scent.

Versace Versus

My boyfriend’s mother has this perfume and whenever she wears it, I follow her around sniffing her. A perfect choice if you want to attract a cult following. ;)

Thierry Mugler Alien

mugler alien

This has been one of my favourites for years. One, the bottle is beautiful, two, it’s purple, three, it’s called Alien and basically made for any girl who feels odd in an awesome David Bowie kind of way, four it smells gorgeous. It’s not a super feminine smell but it does have a tinge of musky sweetness. Out of all the perfumes on here, it’s the one that I really think is ‘me’.

Vera Wang Princess

This is like a girlier version of Alien. I considered buying a bottle before I settled on Alien. It’s more floral and less heavy. What other image can it bring in my mind than a princess? Think Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday or Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries.

Cacharel Amor Amor

It’s floral, slightly fruity and a little bit spicy. I really think of fruit when I think of this smell. I’m not sure if that’s a totally accurate association but that’s what I get! I also think of a cool Parisian woman.

J Lo Glow

The only celebrity scent on my list. This was the first perfume I ever owned. I liked it because it was light and fresh but feminine. I think it’s a great perfume for teenagers because it’s a gentle smell that won’t overpower your classmates.

Dior Hypnotic Poison Eau Sensuelle

SEDUCTIVE is the word and I think that’s exactly what they were going for. I associate it with a barefoot Brigitte Bardot. It’s a delicious scent. A balance of sweet and musk and very rich.
